“There's a calmness in the competition in him. My grandma used to say, ‘Still waters run deep’ and he brought it big time.”
– Sacramento Kings Interim leader Doug Christie said about Devin Carter's performance against the Cleveland Cavaliers
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, Sacramento, Calif. — It was all about conditioning and confidence when Devin Carter was sent down to play for the Sacramento Kings G League affiliate Stockton Kings for 5 five games.
Those aspects of his game were on display in the Kings’s impressive 123-119 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 19 at Golden 1 Center. In 30 minutes, Carter rose off the bench to score 16 points, grab 5 rebounds, dish out 3 assists, and collect 3 steals – two that were turned into breakaway dunks.
DeMar DeRozan led the Kings with 27 points and 4 assists, while Malik Monk contributed 22 points, and 8 assists, for the Kings (35-33, 19-15 at Golden 1 Center), who are clinging on to the 9th spot in the Western Conference.
"My teammates found me. They gave me the confidence to just go out
there, play my game," Carter said after the game. "I knew we were down a few guys, so just knowing I was going to get a little extra tick tonight. So just trying to make the most out of it.”
Trey Lyles, Keegan Murray, and Keon Ellis had 13 points for the King. Jonas Valančiūnas added 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Kings, who found out star center Domantas Sabonis will be sidelined for at least 10 days.
Evan Mobley had 31 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers (56-13, 26-8 on the road), who suffered their 3rd straight loss and will mathematically not reach a 70-win season. Donovan Mitch had 26 points.
The Kings were without the services of Zach LaVine and Jake LaRavia. Sabonis suffered a moderate ankle sprain in the game against the Memphis Grizzlies on March 17 and will be re-evaluated in 10 days.
The Kings fell behind 20-7 after a 3-pointer by Wade at the 3:05 mark of the 1st quarter. Trey Lyles’ 3-point basket cut the Cavaliers lead 43-44 with 3:19 left in the 2nd quarter but Cleveland held on to a 56-47 advantage at intermission.
The Kings finally got ahead of the Cavaliers when Devin Carter made two free throws followed by a steal and dunk to give the Kings a 77-74 margin. Sacramento extended its lead after Carter made a three and Murray completed the run with a duck for a 85-74 extension.
The Cavaliers went on a 12-0 run to regain the lead 88-87 before Murray made another 3-pointer to end the 3rd quarter with a 90-87 King’s advantage.
While the Kings led 113-109 with 2:09 remaining in the game, Mitchell made 3 shots at the free line to pull the Cavaliers within 1 point of the Kings' margin. The Kings outscored the Cleveland 10-7 the rest of the way to hold on to the victory.
