“I gotta stop doing that (expletive).”
– Sacramento Kings player Monk Monk said about his turnovers in the victory over the Memphis Grizzlies
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, Sacramento, Calif. — After the Sacramento Kings practice on March 16, shooting-guard-turned-point-guard Malik Monk told the local media that he had to be better to stop the team’s 4-game losing streak.
In the Kings’ 132-122 victory over the visiting Memphis Grizzlies, Monk was better. More to the point – he was near exceptional despite committing the 3 turnovers he complained after the game.
“I did a pretty good job tonight,” Monk said after the game. “I think I did a pretty good job spacing it out, attacking at the right time, and passing it at the right time. I feel like it was my best game.”
Monk made 10 of 17 shots from the field, 4 of 8 beyond the arc, and all 4 attempts from the foul line for 28 points in 35 minutes, for the Kings (34-33, 18-15 at Golden 1 Center), who are still 9th place in the Western Conference. Domantas Sabonis left the game in the 3rd quarter with an ankle injury.
Zach LaVine added 23 points, including 5 3-pointers, while DeMar DeRozan finished with 22 points and 6 rebounds. Keegan Murray produced 16 points and 10 rebounds and Jake LaRavia rose off the bench to score 12 points and pull down 6 rebounds against his former team.
Demond Bane dropped 44 points against the Kings. He made 15 of 26 shots from the floor, all 7 in 3-point territory as well as 7 of 7 at the charity stripe for Grizzlies (43-26, 18-15 on the road), who played the 1st leg of a 5-game road trip.
The Grizzlies led 22-21 in the first quarter until the Kings went on a 16-4, which was capped off with a dunk by LaRavia, followed by a 3-pointer from Keon Ellis to make the score 37-26. LaRavia, who was sent to Sacramento from the Grizzlies before the trade deadline, instantly scored 6 points when he checked into the game.
The Kings led by as many as 15 points in the 2nd quarter on their way to a 65-54 advantage at intermission. LaVine had 16 points and Monk scored 15 in the first half.
Bane’s 3-point basket cut the Kings lead 75-71 at the 9:25 mark of the 3rd frame. Bane made 8 of 11 shots from the field and all 4 attempts in 3-point territory to finish with 20 points in the quarter.
Kings 98-86 to start the final frame and were ahead as much as 18 points in the last 12 minutes of the game.
