“I enjoyed my time. I really enjoyed the fan. So, cheer for your team.”
– San Antonio Spurs point guard De'Aaron Fox on returning to Sacramento.
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, Sacramento, Calif. — In his first game back in Sacramento after he was traded to the San Antonio Spurs, from the onset, the Sacramento Kings fans booed De’Aaron Fox during introductions and every time he touched the basketball.
In contrast, during a video presentation at the 5:32 mark of the 1st quarter, the young man out of the University of Kentucky who spent 7-plus years in the City of Trees got a modest standing ovation. It was a night of mixed emotions.
Fox made the first basket of the game, a 16-foot fadeaway jump shot. From there, it was Zach Lavine who stole the show. The Kings crushed the Fox and the Spurs 127-108 in front of a sellout crowd of 18,332.
"I almost played with Zach while I was here (in Sacramento)," Fox told PUBLICITY AGENTS. "Everybody in the league knows what Zach can do. Every time I've played him in my career he has hurt us and that's what really hurt us tonight."
LaVine had 36 points 4 rebounds, and 3 assists for the Kings (33-29), who have won 5 of their last six games. LaVine made 14 of 22 from the floor and 7 of 11 in 3-point territory to make it known that he is the new sheriff in town. He scored 16 points in the 2nd quarter.
DeMar DeRozan added 22 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists, while Keegan Murray scored 19 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and blocked 2 shots for Sacramento. Jonas Valančiūnas had 15 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. They are 16-15 at Golden 1 Center.
Fox had 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 8 assists in 33 minutes for the Spurs (26-25, 11-20 on the road). Rookie Stephon Castle had 25 points, making 10 of 17 shots from the floor for San Antonio.
The Spurs had an 8-point lead in the 1st quarter until the Kings emerged to go on a 19-6 run to take the lead 39-32 on a 3-pointer by LaVine. The Kings went on to build a 17-point advantage before ending the 1st half with a 56-42 lead.
LaVine had 18 points, including 4 made threes at the half.
LaVine’s 3-pointer at the 7:46 tick gave the Kings a 76-49 margin in the 3rd segment of the game. The Spurs cut the lead 97-85 early in the 4th quarter on a trey by trey by Keldon Johnson but the Kings raced the margin up to 119-101 on a 3-point play by Murray.
